Well, I would agree...but life is a series of compromises and I compromised here to gain a lot of other photo items I wanted. I'm pretty confident I'll be able to upgrade in a year. In the mean time...I've just got to locate enough folks who will let me photograph them.

I like my 50mm f/1.8. Its really sharp and light, the draw back is its build quality and the lack of a usable focus ring. But hey, I'm just starting out and It was the best bang for the buck at the time. I'll end up upgrading and this will be my loaner lens.

I spent a little more and picked up a Canon 50/1.4 a couple months ago. It's been a great little lens. Good color and sharpness on my 20d. My next will probably be the 85/1.8, I've used it and loved it. When you have a prime don't forget you always have a nike zoom (your feet).
50/1.4 examples.

I was thinking about getting the 50mm 1.4. Not that expensive and a lot more user friendly vs my 50mm 1.8. I didn't end up getting it, but got the 17-55mm 2.8 IS. Super sharp and slightly more expensive, only slightly. :P I'll probably still end up going and getting the 50mm 1.4 later just so it fits on my film camera.

I think that when funds are tight, affording a zoom lens covers a lot for the money. I do think prime lenses are better and lighter, but I am happy to not have to use my "nike" zoom with a tripod and lights to reposition.

I will purchase the 50mm 1.4 one day...just not this year.

I have the 50mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8 and love both of the lenses. The 50mm 1.8 is everything you hear about. It's cheaply built, costs next to nothing as far as lenses go (about $75) and it takes fantastic shots. For the price, I'm not so concerned. If it lasted a year it was worth it. I considered it a disposable. I've had it for almost 2 years now and it's still going strong. I bought it used, along with the 85mm from a guy in Florida. I think he'd had them for a couple of years when he sold them.

I also have the 17-40 F4L. And I'm in love with that lens. It's on my camera 90%+ of the time. The next big lens purchase will be the 24-105. And I saw it on a 5D at Best Buy a couple of days ago for under 3K... I'm itching to get it, but trying to stay married. Comming home with a new 3K camera wouldn't go too for to help in that department.

Is there a general rule for picking lens for certain shots... such as portraits?

If you've got the extra dough... Here's a hard to find item, with either love it or hate it reviews.

FS: Canon 50mm f/1.0 - FM Forums

You don't see an F1 up for sale every day.
