Default Playing with speed.

I was trying to explain to my wife what you could do with really fast shutter speeds the other day. So I figured I give her a demonstration with a water balloon in the back yard. The results.

Out of five balloons I got 4 with the water suspended. 5 or 6 shots per balloon. Balloon hanging on the clothesline, camera on a tripod with a remote, clear sun over the shoulder and a 150w hot light to the left to try to add a little more light. I think it was pretty useless but worth a chance. Remote release on the camera, 50mm/1.4 pre-focused on the balloon and the AF turned off. 1/8000, f/1.8, ISO 100. Get your bamboo skewer in position to run the offending balloon through, press the shutter release, stick the balloon and don't stop shooting until your sure the water has fallen out of frame.

Your camera has to be faster than gravity.

One interesting thing I noticed while doing this is that wherever you burst the balloon at, the broken balloon will fly off in the opposite direction.

You have pretty quick reflexes. I can make out the shape of the balloon. In the past, these sort of shots were triggered electronically.

That is very cool...I'll have to try this with my 40-150 of course. Have tried a colored hot light yet? or Black Backgrounds?..

A technique everyone can try. Thanks for the "Here's How" post.

No, I was just playing around in the backyard to prove a point to my wife.
