Exclamation Poll: Hot or Not?

Looking at activating a "hot or not" type section on the site where registered users can upload an image(s) that would be rated by everyone except guests. We'll start it out for testing purposes and this can later lead to awards/gifts/prizes.

I also want to tie the system into the credit points program, i.e., if you upload an image, you get XX points toward your point total. Just curious what your opinion is on this, please vote! Thanks, rg sends!

Update: The poll has now appeared, so ignored the first remark below.

Was there supposed to be an actual poll, or do we just say Yes or No in a reply to your post. My first response is a sort of No, since the Hot or Not type scripts that I've seen in the past did not work very well and were subject to problems in how reliable they were. But if you do decide to implement something, I think it should be limited to one photo per registered user per time frame or period. Also the way the script works through the photos to be rated, needs to work properlly and bring up all the photos sequentially and not make someone go through the same photos over and over again to find the ones they have not yet voted on.

Naturally we can test a system to start and then point out the problems.

Cheers,
rfs

Well I still have some work on it, for now, if you and/or others want to play with it, here is the link, http://www.shotcritic.com/forums/vbphotovote.php

NOTE: Not all the search functions work. I also want to make the poster's name linkable to their albums and we are trying to incorporate credit points for voting and for uploading images.

CATEGORIES: I have not created the proper categories for uploading. Please post suggestions for categories, i.e., People, Places, Glamour, Fashion, etc....

Thanks, lots of work still left to do, rg sends!

I think it is a good idea. I like those kinds of things although i have no experience with the issues that RFS mentioned. I uploaded an image and that worked fine. I voted on other images and had no problems. I am not seeing a downside to this. At the very least it would work well for contests or that sort of thing.

One problem that I've seen in other scripts for these kinds of systems is the flooding technique. One photographer will flood the system with so many good shots that they will end up with all 5 of the tops slots with their shots. This basically makes the system feel unfair and people start dropping out because one person can control the system. That basically happened on the same sort of system on G1. One photographer had all the top slots. They were good shots, but if there are going to be 5 top slots, then any given photographer should only be able to have one photo in those slots. That is why I recommended limiting it to one photo per registered user. This makes is more fun for all.

I've tested the current system also, and right now I'm seeing a few problems but there are not enough photos yet to really test it. We really need to test by having multiple user accounts for each test, since you can't vote on your own photos.

More later on specific issues as they are found.

Cheers,
rfs

I agree that it should be one photo per person at any given time or something like that.

It appears to me that the same user can vote for the same photo any number of times. At least that is what I'm seeing right now. This obviously has to be fixed. Can some of the other testers confirm this. What I do is click on a photo in the top 5 on which I've already voted. Now click on a different vote. Try a 1, and then see what happens to the photo. Now find the same photo again and this time vote 10, and see what happens, etc.

Note: It now looks like you only vote once, but it will let you come back and change your vote. But in so doing, it does not show your previous vote, so you have to edit blindly. Editing of the votes as pluses and minuses. It does allow for some "gaming" of the system.

cheers,
rfs

shoot.. I posted mine in nature.. it probably should have been birds.. and I'm not sure people will vote on whether birds are hot or not. I being a female also have a hard time deciding if women are hot or not..lol So are we judging photography ie. lighting, contrast, pose or whether we are attracted to the subject?

No problem, it's a test, we'll update the categories and reset everything once the bugs are worked out. Perhaps we should not use "Hot or Not" and I'm open for ideas for a short title..thanks, rg.

I agree, "Hot or Not" is too suggestive. Here are some optional names:

ShotRaters
ShotRater
The Good, the Bad, the Ugly
Good-Bad-Ugly
Raters of the last shot
Rate the Photo
Subjective Evaluations
The Rating Game
Like it or Not
Photo Voter

Well that's a few for now.

cheers,
rfs
