Default I love Infra-Red Photography

I have been able to get out and shoot some Infrared finally. These were both taken with a Cokin IR Filter in color and converted to B&W in CS3. I did add a little glow to both since the time of year is not as good for IR.

Could you explain what infared does? I have never heard of it. Does that mean you shoot in the dark? Shutterbug Electricseashell

It's easier to view your pictures if you post them to an album and then copy and paste the BB code found at the bottom to the post. Plus you have limited storage as attachments which may eventually render this thread moot. If you have to delete them.

There are three ways to get IR pictures.
1 Photoshop.
2 a camera that is converted to take IR photos
and 3 the use of filter.

to explain what it is, Infra-red is emitted light beyond the "Visible" spectrum that humans can see in. The use of a converted camera or filters actually blocks out light that we can see and accepts light that we cannt see but the camera can process and create an image from. There are a few problems with this 1 it is difficult to frame with the filter on ( you cannot see through it) and 2 the focusing point in IR is actually different than in the visible light spectrum. If you have any older manual focusing lenses around take a look at the focusing ring, on it you may see a red line/arrow or dot. this was how to focus for film cameras using IR negative film. The easiest way to get around the focusing point is use a very small aperature opening to get the greatest DOP. You have to use a tripod anyway (average shutter speeds are anywhere from 2 to 15 seconds). But I think it is worth it with the weird otherwordly effects it gives.

The "visible spectrum" covers all electromagnetic radiation (we call it light) the average human can perceive. Infrared is the name given to light just beyond human perception at the red end of the spectrum. Ultraviolet is the name given to the radiation just below the violet end of visible light. You can think of it this way:

Ultraviolet --- Visible Light --- Infrared

UV and Infrared radiation exist all the time. Most people are aware of UV because it gives us a tan...and possibly skin cancer. Most photographers know of infrared film, but both can be photographed by materials able to "see" beyond the human eye in both directions. These materials translate that radiation into a spectrum we can see -- so while an infrared photo looks different, it's not really what the world might look like if we could "see" infrared for real. But they're kinda cool. I actually use infrared filters in "bodyscape" photos (sorry, can't link them on this site) because of the dramatic highlights.

These IR photos are soooo neat.

I am curious to see the color photos that you took before you edited them. Is that possible? If so just add them to the album.

The camera you used for these pictures, is it a digital camera?

The photos are Magenta in color and do not look real good but I will post them. I use a digital camera for everything now. Canon Digital Rebel (modified to be a 10d) and an XTI. I used to use infra-red film before but the processing was costly. With digital it is much easier.

I added 2 new pictures to my Infra-red Album. 1 showing no conversion and the other showing it after. I used this picture to show another common problem in Infra-Red photography, using filters, the spot in the middle which is either from the sun or possibly a speck of dust that got on the filter as the picture was taken. The longer time exposures does alow this to happen and I clean the filter prior to every shot and it still happens. The sun is unpredictable since you cannot see it until after the shot has been taken, but sometimes it gives a great effect also, but that is rare.
