Default ANOTHER Hoosier!?

Ahh! .. I'm new.. and I'm from Indiana too! ..
Wow.. that rhymed a little too much for comfort.

But seriously (as hard as that is for me).. I'm really looking forward to looking around and learning all that I can from my fellow S.C's. I'm a bit new even to this 'non-point-and-shoot' world. I am currently a student at the Art Institute of Indianapolis going for my BS in Digital Photography.. Love this school, seriously. This is their second quarter (at the Indianapolis branch) for this major, so we're all kind of learning together, and if anyone has something they're already bringing to the table, Kudos!

I look forward to learning and growing with all of you.
I have so many ideas for shoots.. .. now its time to pull together what I need to make them a reality.

Thank you!
Jill

Thanks guys..
Ive been looking through the forums all morning, seeing some amazing photography..
but my questions are really always surrounding "How?"
"HOW were these shots pulled off?" "What was used?" "What settings?" For someone as new as I am, these are important questions for me.

Sadly, I do not have my own super wonderful camera yet. I have to do what I do with the cameras the school offers which is not but a Nikon D50 equipped with an 18-55mm lens. .. Needless to say, I'm not sure I'll be keeping up with the photos that are posted on here thus far.. ha ha.

So I suppose suggestions on what kinds of cameras are good for someone with high aspirations, and a small student budget would be most appreciated!

Looking forward to joining the masses,
Jill

The D50 and that lens are quite capable of producing great shots. As for when you get your own camera... I am a canon guy so I would suggest looking at the digital rebel or the 40D.

As for the how? My best suggestion is to read. Both here and other websites as well as books. Learn the technical aspects involved in lighting and composition and shutter speeds and aperatures. read and ask questions and shoot and post and then listen to the critiques. You will get there in no time if you are serious about it.

are they? .. damn.. that means that it's just me.. ha ha

I may not be a very "serious" person in txt like this, but I am very serious about the education I receive, both at school and in places such as this. Ive had images in my head for a couple years now that I fear if I don't get them out, I will seizure. I completed one series for my final this quarter, but I do not find it to be up to my standards. I plan on completing it again when I have a bit more experience.

I was actually thinking of the Rebel.. Ive seen and heard great things about it.
Now to really work on the fundings towards it!

Thank you for the advice.
Jill

If you see a shot you like, just ask. I'm sure the photographer will be happy to tell you more about how it was done and what (if any) post processing was done to it.

The Rebel is a very good camera for the price. But any experience you get now translates to whatever camera you will have 20 years from now. Pay attention to composition, lighting and focus and you can do more with a D50 than many people who buy much more expensive gear.

Welcome to Shot Critic, I'm a shutterbug with a daughter in college, so I can relate to the expense. Since your in a photography program your school will offer progressively more financial aid. Ask the financial aid office for your professors curriculum expense report, then you can plan for the semester that finacial aid will cover that great camera. Electricseashell

Welcome aboard. Not to stire up the debate, but since you are starting with a Nikon and you probably realise what a nice camera that is, than i would research more on the differences between the Canons and Nikons and in the end I have a fealing that you may want to stick with a Nikon... especially their lastest gear like the D300. FYI: Nikon lenses in my opinion are far better than the quality your are now getting from Canon. Remember this is just my opinion and research is always the best judge.

Nikon vs Canon... That is a big and sometimes heated debate.

I will say for the record that in my film days I was a Nikon shooter. I will never say anything against their glass. However, the canon L series glass and the prime lenses I use are equally as good as the nikon as far as I can tell. When I made the switch to digital in 2004 I of course looked at Nikon first. It took me about 5 minutes with the D100 to know I didnt like it so I then looked at Fuji and Canon. I ended up selling all of my Nikon gear and going with Canon and I havent regretted it for a second..

The big thing to remember is that the camera you use is just a tool. A good photographer can use pretty much any camera and get a good shot. You just have to find what works best for you.
