I'll try to say more than it's soft.
I certainly haven't mastered black & white, but it looks like this photo could use a little more contrast and sharpening. I usually don't go for the "up the nose" pose but do like experimenting. I would have liked to see better lighting on her face. It appears you used two main lights, one on the model's left and her right leaving the dark shadow on her face. Judging by the small catch light in her eyes, maybe that light could have been brought up a couple of stops?
