Default Playful by the water ...

This shot of Kennedy in the Infinity pool illustrates the use of the lighting in this out-take shot:

Camera Model: Canon EOS 20D
Shutter speed: 1/50 sec
Aperture: 4
Exposure mode: Manual
ISO: 100
Lens: 70 to 200mm

Since I didn't want to take my camera into the water, I was laying flat on my back about 40' from the model. I had the camera balanced on my midsection and it was quite uncomfortable. Note: It was about that bright when we were shooting, so you can obviously see that combination of Aperture and flash is changing the sky's brightness.

Cheers,
Roger

I don't understand why.

An amazing shot for the conditions. Heck, it's an amazing shot any way you look at it. Even more amazing is that you managed to hold the camera steady at 1/50th of a second. Are you using an IS lens, did you have the camera braced somehow, or are you just "that good"?

If I had tried that it would have been a blurry mess. I have to use an amazingly high shutter-speed or really, really be paying attention to controlling my natural "shakiness" to hand-hold my shots. Sometimes I wonder if my camera thinks I'm a junkie.

I wish I was really that good! But take a look at the lighting shot. You'll see a large flash. That's about a 1250ws flash so it is what is lighting the subject and thus dragging the shutter at 1/50th is controlling the amount of ambient light that represents the background while the flash is providing all the light for the model. Since the flash would typically fire at 1/1000th of a second or even faster, that stops any blurring. So if I wanted the sky lighter, I would have reduced the shutter speed even more.

Cheers,
rfs

These are fantastic...the 1st one is my fav of course...I figured you were not in the water...the Angle is almost parallel with it...But what got my attention was how you posed here hands to hide here body (almost)...just enough leg to know she is laying flat. At least that is the appearance it gives.

Get rid of that really nice Hensel in the foreground, and clone out the dirt in the midground and it would look like she was walking on water with a good "sunbeams through the clouds" sky.

Ah! I get it. That's something I'd never thought about, but since I'm just now taking a portrait photography class, I'd never really been exposed to high-powered flash before.

Thanks for the info!

Heh. I'd appreciate it if he'd "get rid of that really nice Hensel" right into the back of my car.
