Default Quiet Lately

It sure has been quiet in here lately.

I'm getting more and more ideas of things I want to shoot, so I thought
I'd break the silence with some rambling thoughts on the subject and see
if others felt like doing similar things and then posting back here with results.

After reading the link posted by R_Fredrick_Smith in this thread

PortFolios

I gave some thought on what I wanted to include in my first portfolio. After going through some shots I had I decided I wanted to make 3. The first one would be 12 shots of what I considered to be my best work to date. The next one would be expanding on some shots of churches and items around churches that I started taking a year or so ago. 12 shots here too. And the third one is something more along the lines of a personal challenge. I'm going to put away my favorite lens (17-40 F4L) and put my 50mm F1.8 on my camera for a week. I'm going to carry it with me every day, and see what I get. This portfolio will have a working title (until I come up with a better one) of "My World, 50mm at a time". I'm not going to put any other limitations on what I shoot other than it has to be done with the 50mm, and I can't shoot the shots in Program mode. So, not only will I have to think about the framing a little more due to using a prime, I'll have to think about the Fstop and Aperture I need to use to capture what I have in mind at the time. At the end of my week with the 50mm, I'll pick the best 12 images of the lot and print them for a port.

This third port is the one that I wonder if others would like to do also. If so, pick any week between now and June 10th, (That's when I'll have finished my 50mm week) and shortly after we'll post the pics and our thoughts on the week. IE, How using only the 50mm without Program mode changed how we shoot and how we think about getting the shot. If you guys aren't interested, then please excuse the interruption. I return you now to your regularly scheduled silence

That's something I don't really know if I want to do yet, and I don't know if I'll ever be ready to do it. I see it as more of a hobby. I might become more serious with the hobby as time goes by. And I have been thinking about seperating my family type shots from things that I think would look more artistic and professional. I've been thinking more and more about setting up a second site, getting some cards made up, and maybe trying to get a showing in the next year or so. If nothing else, to get some exposure that might open a few doors for shooting opportunities that wouldnt' happen without taking a little more professional approach. But for that to happen, I need to be more confident in my skills. I'm working on them, and I'm pleased with a lot more shots now per session than I was a year ago. This weekend I ended up with over half the shots being something I felt I could work with and would look nice framed if I spent a little time processing them. That's way up from two years ago when I looked for a keeper in each batch. I'm having to stop and think less about what settings I want to use. I'm "Seeing" the composition and lighting before I click the shutter, and take that step to one side or another to get the twig out of the corner of the shot or the branch out of the person's ear.

In other words, I'm no where ready to charge for my services, but there's no reason I can't try to behave as professional as I can in my practices as long as it doesn't take the fun out of what I'm doing.
