Default Permits

Do any of you guys (or gals) have a good source to read up on when and where permits would be required for shooting in public areas.

I'm wanting to do some shots in San Antonio and I'd hate to get ticketed for not being prepared.

Have you tried talking to the permits department of San Antonio's city hall or the city's clerk? It would vary from city to city because it is a municipal matter.

I thought you didn't need a permit unless it's promotional work? Like shooting commercial products or advertisements. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a "public place" if you can't use it. I should look up such info as well for my area. I hope some of the pros respond to this. This sort of informations is very important. Save you time and a ticket.

I was hoping for something a little more definitive. Some way to know when I need to call a municipality about a permit and when I didn't have to worry about it. Right now, I have no idea.

I don't know Kirk... That's why I'm asking.

And although the stuff I shoot isn't commercial, I do try to keep in mind that if I were to shoot something that I thought was just outstanding I wouldn't be above trying to sell it. So, I try to keep my ducks in a row from the start of the shoot. Even though making a buck from it is not my goal.

A permit is very different from a property release. You can have all the permits you want but if there is private property in the shot you may very well need a property release.

As for the permits. Post 911 alot of places are really cracking down on permits. Your best bet would be talk to someone in the city clerks office to find out your answer as it will be different in every town.

Thanks Scott.

I guess that sounds like a good project. Putting together permit information for areas. Something like this site, where people from all over can put in contact information for clerks offices for their area and information about getting permits / stories about their experiences with getting permits in those areas.

Every place Is Different,In Pittsburgh,All State Parks Require A $50.00 Permit To shoot Models. They Also Have Strict Rules As to you Can Not Have An advertising Van Displayed Near Where You are Shooting Etc.Some Times Just Checking With the Park Or City Parks Office Is All you Need To do.However Local Muncipal Areas Casn Have There Own Rules.
I Was Stoped While Shooting A Swimwear Model Once Even When I Had A Permit. Most Of The Female White Water Rafters That Were Standing Around Watching Us Were Wearing A Lot Less Than Our Models.
