Default One Evening

A series of shots from one very pleasant evening last week. Mostly from my backyard:

Paul's Gallery - One Evening

C&C will be much appreciated.

Regards,

Paul

Nice color balance. What kind of lens did you use?

Thanks! I'm just feeling my way through a number of different lenses on a new (to me) Canon 20D:
  • The macro shots and the night sky: Canon EFS 18-55 IS
  • "Fauna" shots: 480mm F/6 William Optics scope
  • Tree branches: Tokina ATX 80-200mm F/2.8

Trying to see what each can do, and whether I need other focal length and/or speed lenses.

Regards,

Paul

They are mostly pleasant photos of backyard type things. The night time shot is nice, and has the most potential for some post work to make it have a little pop. Several of the shots have potential but mostly you just stuck stuff right in the middle of the frame and didn't really consider how different framing might effect the photo.
Cheers,
rfs

I need to learn to crop better. I do try cropping variations while post processing, but in most cases, don't see the big difference between them. I think my eye isn't trained enough to seek out the right framing. I do recognize a better crop when someone else does it, but just can't see it when I'm doing it

Regards,

Paul

Try conciously using the rule of thirds as a beginning lesson in good in camera cropping. Imagine a tick tac toe board drawn on your display with the 2 vertical lines dividing the viewfinder into 3rds and the two horizontal lines dividing into thirds. Then place the most important element of the photo on one of the interesection points. Or at least on one of the lines. The rule of thirds is a good starting point.

Cheers, rfs

I agree with what has been said already, I think there are a couple that could be pretty good shots with some additional cropping.

Also, it is easier for the viewer if you actually post the images in your post for us to see. Alot of people dont like following links to outside pages as well as it just makes it easier to give a critique.

Thanks for posting

Scott

Sorry guys, I figured I wouldn't take up storage space here, plus the album upload has restrictions on image sizes. This would require me to reprocess all the shots. How about this: I'll post a few messages following this, with the image links embeded in them instead? Below are the first three shots:

Paul
