Default Here is my 5 Cents worth ...

Well we've all heard the old expression, here's my "2 cents" worth, but I've change it to 5 cents (you know inflation has set in since the original old saying). And here is my editorial shot to illustrate my updated version:

Anyone ever seen one of these (fractional currency)?

Cheers,
rfs

Actually one in this good of condition is worth at least $50 to $100 and they often go for more.

It might be old paper, and it might be worth something.. but if I remember my federal law books.. it is still not legal to photograph U.S. curency and to make it available to the general public... (just saying... LOL)

Even if there is such a law still on the books, intent would be the governing factor. In this case, its moot, since the currency in not legal tender and hasn't been for over 100 years.

Also there is the question of size, color, etc. For more information see:

18 UNITED STATES CODE; 504: Treasury Directive Number 15-56 FR 48539 (September 15,1993) 411.1 Color illustrations authorized.

Also check out eBay for thousands of photographs of old currency and both sides at that and in lifesize in some cases and color.

cheers,
rfs

good chance they changed the laws.. but when I was dealing with coind and paper money way back in the 60's and 70's it was different.. and not just for illustrations.. but I wasnt complaining.. nor criticizing..

It's only legal if the reproduction meets 3 criteria last I knew...

1) single sided
2) is less than 75% as long or more than 150% as long
3) all mediums (including electronic files) used to create the image must be destroyed after final use

No idea what that last means to a scanned image created solely for the purpose of showing it every now and again. When I was in advertising, those were the legal guidelines for creating ads anyway. If RFS disappears for 10 - 20, we'll know what happened!

I don't recall intent being mentioned as a requirement for criminal prosecution, but I'm sure it would be taken into account.

I have never seen a fractional note. Thanks for risking your freedom so that I could!

The three things Photosbychuck mentions are the three things specified in the legal reference I made earlier. The photo I introduced is 1 side only. It is about double the original size. And naturally #3 is sort of stupid, because who can say when final use will occur. I plan to work with the photo again 2 years from now, so I would have to keep it till then. And again the current laws on the books only apply to legal currency of the US. None of this old currency is legal tender since we are no longer on the gold or silver standards, etc.
Cheers,
rfs

I believe they are still legal tender -- at face value. But we're just having fun with the whole legal side of it. You're going to have to really work something big to make money from a 5 cent note!
