Default Theme- Sculpture

I Take alot of photos of sculptures these I took at Frederick Meijer Gardens in Mothers Day 2005 I didn't care for the background but there was really no way to shoot around it. It also has bright light on the right which shines too much.. any suggestions? I can't physically carry a large white canvas to place behind sculptures and sometimes it's the setting that makes the sculpture.
The piece is called The Story Teller View One

This is an example where you could improve things by using a wide open prime lens at between f1.2 and f1.8. In other words open up for the narrowest DOF and thus throw the background out of focus.
Cheers,

Your second composition works much better than the first, imho. Your are tighter on your subject, making the viewer part of the scene...more drawn into the story the man is telling. (His hand is also not blocking his face!) That second image is a great candidate for selective blurring. It will be tougher to accomplish on the first.

I agree I like the second shot better as well.. I really like the sculpture so many little details that can only be viewed from select angles. I think I was trying to capture her hand and the connection between them.. and missed the fact that his hand covered his face.. I think a half step to the right would have corrected that.. I still havent had a chance to do any photoshopping. Thanks for the comments.

I agree with with Chuck here. You could take care of the back ground in PS on that one fairly easily. Then it would be a really nice shot

In addition to the Shallow DOF mentioned, you can also shoot later and use lighting to make the background disappear.

Edit:

This statue is beside a busy intersection, with a huge parking lot behind it. So no angle looked good even with a shallow DOF.
So, I went back around 9:30 at night and set up my tripod. The blue tint is actually from the blue lights they light the statue with.
